Race # 6 in the Kenworth Northwest Points Series set a new club record for car count when 56 cars signed in to do battle at the Grays Harbor Mini Raceway in Elma, WA. Officials were able to keep with the scheduled format due in part to the drivers efforts of racing clean and putting on a great show for the spectators.
When sign-ins were complete, Jr Honda once again was full enough to warrant a B-Main event. Autumn Johnson led every lap for the win, while the rest of the field swapped positions lap after lap in search of a transfer position. Ryan Mottner held on to second while Jeremiah Mueller, Riley Watkins, and McKenzie Journey battled for the final two spots. In the end, Jeremiah and Riley earned the rights for the back row of the A-main.
In Jr Novice Group 1, Colton Johansson came from the back to win the event. Justin Sample held off Zachary Gee and Chance Brogan for the second spot, with Zachary and Chance finishing third and fourth, respectively.
Jr Novice Group 2 found Theresa Chapin scoring her first win of the year, holding off all of the boys. Nate Mueller worked traffic to perfection and came home second, with Dylan Boman and Tucker Holcomb rounding out the top four. Jr Novice group 2 also saw the debut of 5 year old Bristol Biggs. Bristol did a great job and was all smiles as he reached for his novice graduation trophy. With a name like that, you know he's going to be a racer. Welcome aboard Bristol!
The Sr Novice A-Main had a determined "Miss" Raina Magnuson working her way from the rear of the field to take the win, but not before Anthony Chapin led all but the last lap after his chain came loose under a yellow flag and he was done for the day. Kyle Nations grabbed the second spot, with Tyler Palmer and Sarah Chapin finishing third and fourth.
The Jr Honda A-main had veteran driver Janell McPeake grab the lead from outside row 1 and never look back. She added to her points lead by capturing the win, while Kaitlyn Journey gave her a run, ending up second. Autumn Johnson did a great job coming from the B-Main to finish third, and Josiah Volz finished the day in fourth.
The Sr Honda A-Main was a crowd pleaser, and had the play by play announcing by Lt 160 driver Austin "the Heartbreaker" Hespe adding to the entertainment. When the laps were complete, Angie Magnuson took home the gold, with Ariel Biggs settling for second. Garret Johnson and Jason Reed chased the girls, but as they will learn later in life, sometimes its just not enough.
Lt 160 was full. An eleven car field filled the tiny 1/20th mile clay track, and the action was thrilling for the crowd. TJ Hartman started on the front row next to his sister, but couldn't be bribed to let her get the jump on him. TJ battled an ill handling car and after tangling with another car, headed to the pits for work. Nik Larson took over the lead and never looked back. Garret Johnson gave it all he had, but settled for second while Allison Journey and TJ Hartman worked their way from the back of the field to finish third and fourth, respectively.
Hvy 160 saw David Hilts getting his second win in as many days, leading every lap of the event. Serina McPeake was able to get by when cars started dicing for position and wound up second. Cassy Olson finished third and James Alexander tied up fourth.
In the Jr 1/2/ Briggs W/F A-Main, TJ Hartman could not hold off the hard charging Allison Journey. Allison drove a perfect race and took advantage when the handling gave up on TJ's car. TJ finished second, with Seth Hespe coming home third.
Racing resumes July 16 when round # 7 of the Kenworth Northwest Points Series takes to the track at the Grays Harbor Fairgrounds. Racing starts at 10:00AM, and as always, admission is free. See you there.
